Here are a list of supplies I used for these lessons.
Please know that you don’t have to go out an buy all the colors on the list. You can totally use other colors, as long as the oil pastel is a good brand. I strongly suggest you get a few of the Sennelier or other good brand pastels rather than a whole lot of a cheap brand, as it will just frustrate you and not get the desired effects. The harder and drier the pastel is, the more difficult it will be to do any sort of blending or shading.
Supply List
- 1 sheet of 9×12″ (or larger) black pastel paper and 1 sheet of 9×12″ (or larger) gray tinted pastel paper (I used the Flecked series of Fabriano Tiziano pastel paper) If you can’t find pastel paper you can also paint a regular paper with mat acrylic or black gesso or grey matt acrylic to tint it and give it a tiny bit of tooth. I strongly suggest you don’t go much smaller than 9×12″ for starting out, as it will be much harder to get in the details otherwise.
- A light colored pastel pencil (for sketching), and Brown Conte pencil or pastel pencil
- Oil pastels. I used the Sennelier oil pastels in these colors (but please use
- what you have, or whatever colors you are inspired to use) Black, white, Moss green, grayish white or off white, turquoise blue, warm yellow, Prussian green, emerald green, turquoise deep or turquoise blue, charcoal blue celestial blue, light gray, teal, cobalt violet light
- A rag or napkins to clean both your hands and the pastels
- Porcupine stick, skewer or something pointed to scratch into the pastel
- Tortillions or blending sticks (optional but helpful)
