Taking it further

Now you can either leave this painting as is, or go a little further and add the broken glass. I wanted to add this as I wanted to show how she had the courage to break that glass, even getting cut in the process. Breaking free is never easy, it takes so much courage, and sometimes we even get hurt in the process. But what we find on the other side is so worth it.
It is liberating.
It is healing.
It is finding ourselves again.

I start out making a sketch of jagged lines to indicate broken glass, leaving at least one of her eyes and her fingertips peeking through.
Then with the glazing medium, I mix that with a tiny bit of white and glaze it over the glass, more opaque towards the edges, and thinning it out as I go out to the edges of the paper.

I also added a little bit of cadmium red mixed with Payne’s gray to indicate the cut on her fingers and let that drip. You don’t have to add this, I just like to add a little extra drama, and like I mentioned, it represents the difficulties of breaking free.

As a little last touch, I decided to darken the outer edges with some Payne’s gray, diluted and mixed with a little glazing medium. I often do this when I like to bring the eye to the middle of the painting, to emphasize the crack in the glass and her eyes.

And she’s done!

Lets get on to our second project. This one will be more in-depth, with hardly any parts sped up. Take your time with this one, and don’t forget to have fun!
