So now we begin to add medium to light values, letting the paper be our darkest value.
I like to lightly blend the pastels with my finger and then scratch into the pastel with a stick to
create texture and lines with the black paper showing underneath.
To add a glowing effect around the Raven’s body we blend the pastel outwards into the black to create a sort of smoky, glowing effect.
Part two: the raven
Remember that patience is the key in creating details and layers. If you get frustrated with it at one point, instead of giving up just take a break and come back to it with fresh eyes.
Black paper can be tricky, but if we push through and keep adding those luminous colors they will really begin to pop off the page!
So feel free to take a little break now before we go onto completing the piece. It also helps to take a photo with your phone to see if anything is out of place or needs adjusting before moving on to the final stage.
